Discussion on any page, section, or record

Phonon will add threaded discussion to any page, any part of a page, or any Valence record, open to whoever can see that record. Phonon is planned after Magnon's public release.

Why it exists

Feedback about a page ends up in chat, far from the thing it's about, and claims in it go unchecked. Phonon keeps discussion on the page, element or record it's about, ranks replies by how helpful they are, and lets experts settle disputes about facts.

On the roadmap

Phonon will store discussion in Valence, render threads with Orbital, push live updates through Photon, and send reply notifications to the platform inbox. Polaron experts will resolve fact disputes, and Magnon ballots will host their discussion in Phonon.
This is the planned design. A host turns on the Phonon plugin, and every page gets its own discussion with no change to the page's code. A discussion can narrow to one part of a page, such as a chart or a form, or attach to a Valence record, where access follows the record. Global topics such as General appear everywhere, and anyone can start a local topic on one page. Replies nest, and readers vote on how helpful each one is. Marking a reply unfactual opens a dispute that a Polaron expert in the topic's field upholds or dismisses. Moderators hide, remove or lock posts with a reason, and authors get one appeal.
